I created the concept based on the metaphor of lines representing threads, inspired by the installations for which Chiharu Shiota is famous

Chiharu Shiota is a Japanese artist working in the genres of performance and installation art. She is known for her giant webs made of threads, which transform galleries into labyrinthine spaces.

I split the long-read into three chapters, each highlighting a different stage of Chiharu Shiota's life. The concept was centered around threads that transform, reflecting the experiences and changes she went through at each stage of her journey.

chapter I

This is the story of Chiharu's early years as an artist: she knows she wants to create, but she's unsure how. Traditional art forms like painting don’t resonate with her; she doesn’t want to create just for the sake of it — for her, it's about conveying deeper meaning.

To create a stronger emphasis on the idea of order, I proposed the concept of an opening animation, which we developed collaboratively with the project manager and motion designer.

Here, I used thin, grey, barely noticeable lines, arranged vertically without a defined shape, to highlight the uncertainty of this period.

Chapter II tells the story of Chiharu Shiota's art, how she creates installations, and the meanings she embeds in her works.

For this part, I chose red color because Chiharu often uses red threads in her work. Her installations are often likened to spider webs, so I designed the lines to look like intertwined threads, representing a web.

Chapter III tells the story of Chiharu’s battle with cancer.

It was a dark time, so I used a dark background and placed a single line in the center — the last thread, symbolizing physical weakness and a state close to death. During this period, Chiharu also started incorporating white threads, so I made the line white.
